ASTM D790 the flexural (bending) properties of reinforced and unreinforced plastics

ASTM D790 Flexural tests/bending test are generally used to determine the flexural modulus or flexural strength of a material. The material is laid horizontally over two points of contact (lower support span) and then a force is applied to the top of the material through either one or two points of contact (upper loading span) until the sample fails. The maximum recorded force is the flexural strength of that particular sample. 


For ASTM D790, the test is stopped when the specimen reaches 5% deflection or the specimen breaks before 5%. For ISO 178, the test is stopped when the specimen breaks. Of the specimen does not break, the test is continued as far a possible and the stress at 3.5% (conventional deflection) is reported. 


Specimen: 3.2mm x 12.7mm x 125mm (0.125" x 0.5" x 5.0") 

Test Speed:   R = ZL2/6d

where:

R = rate of crosshead motion, mm (in.)/min,

L = support span, mm (in.),

d = depth of specimen, mm (in.), and

Z = rate of straining of the outer fiber, mm/mm/min (in./

in./min). Z shall be equal to 0.01.

Span: for most material "Materials 1.6 mm (1⁄16 in.) or Greater in Thickness" 

the span is 16 times of thickness, mean Span = 16*3.2= 51.2mm.  (Refer standard ASTM D790 section 7)

The specimen is deflected until rupture occurs in the outer surface of the test specimen or until a maximum strain of 5.0 % is reached, whichever occurs first.
