ASTM D3330 tape peeling test, Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tape

ASTM D3330 test methods cover the measurement of the peel adhesion of pressure-sensitive tapes.

1 Test Method A gives a measure of the adherence, when peeled at 180° angle, to a standard steel panel or to other surface of interest for a single-coated tape.

2 Test Method B gives a measure of the adherence to the backing of a single-coated tape.

3 Test Method C gives a measure of the adherence of double-coated tape to a standard steel panel or other surface of interest.

4 Test Method D gives a measure of the adherence of the release liner to the adhesive of either single- or double-coated tape.

5 Test Method E gives a measure of the adherence of an adhesive transfer tape to a standard steel panel or other surface of interest.

6 Test Method F gives a measure of the adherence, when peeled at 90° angle, to a standard steel panel or other surface of interest for a single-coated tape.

ASTM D3330 is a test procedure for evaluating peel adhesion value of pressure sensitive tapes. Often the data is required to meet acceptance criteria for engineering applications. Multiple procedures are outlined within the specification.

Test Procedure:

Test Method A for Single-Coated Tapes at 180° Angle

A stainless steel panel is cleaned and dried. A 12 mm (0.5 in) tab is folded on one end of a 300mm (12 inch) specimen. The other end of the specimen is touched to the panel and a roller is applied lengthwise twice to adhere the tape to the panel. The folded tab is placed in the grip of the universal tester at a 180°angle and pulled at 5.0 mm/s (12.0 in/min.).

Specimen size:

25.4 mm (1.0 in) long x 300 mm (12 in) wide. Five specimens are tested.
